The Edge Chronicles
Directed by Steve Zienka

Steven Zienka is a student at Academy of Art University, and as a student project, he chose to adapt a scene from The Edge Chronicles, a series of children's books written and illustrated by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. Perhaps I shouldn't devote a page to this little exercise, but I loved the writing and doing the scene, so here it is.

I am Spelda Snatchwood, a wood troll and I have to tell my son, Twig, played by Spencer Neustadt, a number of very painful things. First, he has to leave home; he's 13, an adult, and must find his own way. He's not built for felling trees like his father, Tuntum. The cabin is too small for him; he's already too tall and slim, not like wood trolls who are small and stocky. And the sky pirates, having seen him on a wood selling trip with his father, will come looking for him to take him away. Sky pirates are like that -- always abducting woodtrolls who never come back to tell the tale.

Then I have to confess that even though Tuntum and I have loved him like our very own, he is not our son. We found him wrapped in a shawl at the foot of our tree. Everyone thought he was a genetic abberation, but no, he's just not one of us. So, after a very tearful and emotional farewell, he's off on his great and dangerous adventures, hopefully sticking to the path and steering clear of the fearfull glomglozer.

I did the part in an Irish accent. It was fun, but it also made the difference between me and Twig even more stark. Spencer played it in his normal American accent.

And here's a little bonus to my characterization. My dentist made a booboo a few days before the shoot. He messed around a little too deeply while trying to get an impression of a post for a cap he was preparing for me. I got a pretty bad infection which caused a lot of pain and a huge amount of swelling on one side of my face. I really looked monstrous. Much of it was gone, after a quick course of penicillan and ibuprofen. But like any good actor, I used it.

It's been 9 months and still no word on when I get a copy of the video. How sad. I was pretty sure he'd be good for it. Will continue trying to contact Steve and let you know if he comes through.

Notice the swelling on the right side of
my face? Very trollish.

My beautiful boy must leave home.
Love his Edge coif- straight from the book.

I try so hard to be brave, but my heart is breaking. Is this ever my close-up.
